Chocolate Peppermint Jenga

We had some friends come over on Saturday for a big turkey dinner, and I thought it would be the perfect time to try a new batch of ice cream. This time, Chocolate Peppermint!

The chocolate and peppermint recipes I was combining both started with a custard base, unlike the cream base I used last time for an Orange-Cream flavor. The set-up was a little more complex, but it was so creamy I think it could be frozen without any stirring. I've done some more reading on cooking custards, and next time I'll be be making some changes (including ditching the ice bath). I meant to take a picture of the 'after', but it was gobbled up so quick I didn't get a chance.

For now, both the cream and custard bases need a few tweaks before any recipes are ready to share. I've also read that they can be made with a coconut milk base, which I would love to try later on. (I'm thinking that one needs some brown sugar and a bit of curry!) I just can't believe how easy it is to make ice cream, even without an ice cream maker, and they turned out so well (I'm not normally a fan of homemade). Yet I still heard a few comments that 'it would be even easier to buy pre-made ice cream from the store, and it comes in most any flavor you would want'. Pffff. Where's the fun in that?

Well, for you girls out there surrounded by snow, I'll move on to warmer things.

After dinner we also enjoyed some crazy Jenga action. Usually my indoor-night pictures turn out just terrible, but I've been learning a bit more about my cameras manual settings lately and taking pictures like crazy. Still a bit pixel-ly, but I can tell there is a big improvement (especially since I barely had to do any editing!).

Justin likes to apply the quick motion technique, like whipping a tablecloth out from under a fully set table. And it usually works, but the rest of us don't have the guts to try it ourselves.
